Depending on who you talk to, the topic of VR in education leads to enthusiasm, rejection and skepticism or even a lot of questions. In our discussions with many players in the school sector and VR, we did not find anyone who said that school education in the future will take place exclusively in virtual reality. “Sometimes VR, a lot of other digital methods and sometimes a book” – this is roughly how one interviewee summed it up.
So what could the future of classrooms look like if we integrate VR more into everyday school life? And what would all the players in the education system have to do to make this possible? For which target groups would this be something at all – and why?
While many of our project results are either practically applicable, such as our VR apps; or scientifically sound, such as our reports and publications; we wanted our mission statement “The Future of the Classroom” to be a scenario-like essay in which we summarize and sharpen our findings. It should enable the reader to understand how we at VIRION envision the future of the classroom with VR. It should also help the reader to form their own image of the future, because of course we at VIRION cannot predict the future either. In this way, our mission statement can inspire agreement and contradiction and thus advance the discourse on this important topic.
You can find “The Future of the Classroom” in our White Book, page 24.
